I Don't Belong To You is a song by Keke Palmer released on October 23, 2015 by Island Records.

Background and meaningEdit

Palmer announced her contract with Island in August, when her rep confirmed to EW that she had signed with the label and her first single would be out in the fall. The new album will be Palmer’s first since 2007’s So Uncool.

Keke described the song’s meaning recently in an interview with Necole Bitchie: “I don’t belong to anyone else but myself. I have to make my own decisions. Happiness is defined by me. My sexuality is defined by me. And that can change and this can change and I can make it what I want to make it because I’m the one who makes that choice. So that’s what ‘I Don’t Belong to You’ is saying. This song feels right. It feels right and it’s telling who I am. And it captures my identity.”

Remix VersionEdit

LyricsEdit

[Chorus]
I don't belong to you
Keep it on the down low
Keep it on the down low
I don't belong to you
Keep it on the down low
Keep it on the down low
I don't belong to you

[Post-Chorus]
Ain't no white house, ain't no picket fence
Baby, you know we don't want the same things
While you're caught up in your feelings
I feel the same as I did yesterday
Baby, we've been through this and I feel the same way
I know you don't wanna hear this, and I hate to say it, babe

[Verse 1]
I done told you, I done showed you
Now you wanna act like I tricked you
But I'm sleep, can't you see?
There's a difference between me, you and these sheets

[Chorus]
I don't belong to you
Keep it on the down low
Keep it on the down low
I don't belong to you
Keep it on the down low
Keep it on the down low
I don't belong to you

[Post-Chorus]
Ain't no white house, ain't no picket fence
Baby, you know we don't want the same things
While you're caught up in your feelings
I feel the same as I did yesterday
Baby, we've been through this and I feel the same way
I know you don't wanna hear this, and I hate to say it, babe

[Verse 2]
Don't you act innocent, you own the part that you play
And I'm not interested in playing your childish games
No, no, no, no, I don't have to keep it real
But I do because I care 'bout how you feel

[Chorus]
I don't belong to you
Keep it on the down low
Keep it on the down low
I don't belong to you
Keep it on the down low
Keep it on the down low
I don't belong to you

[Post-Chorus]
Ain't no white house, ain't no picket fence
Baby, you know we don't want the same things
While you're caught up in your feelings
I feel the same as I did yesterday
Baby, we've been through this and I feel the same way
I know you don't wanna hear this, and I hate to say it, babe

[Outro]
Don't take it all so personal
I just can't give you what you want
Don't think that you can just keep tryin' me
Boy, I'll just leave you alone
I don't belong to you

[Intro: Keke Palmer]
I don't belong to you

[Verse 1: Ty Dolla $ign]
We can keep it on the DL
Hell nah, girl, I'll never tell
You with a new n***a, I'm with my same girl
Mama said we both should be ashamed, girl
Creepin' like we hit a lick
Got you cummin' when I licky lick
Screamin' when I'm deep in it
But still...

[Chorus: Keke Palmer + Ty Dolla $ign]
I don't belong to you
Keep it on the down low
Keep it on the down low
I don't belong to you
Keep it on the down low
Don't say a word
Keep it on the down low
I don't belong to you

[Post-Chorus: Keke Palmer]
Ain't no white house, ain't no picket fence
Baby you know we don't want the same things
While you're caught up in your feelings
I feel the same as I did yesterday
Baby we've been through this and I feel the same way
I know you don't wanna hear this, and I hate to say it, babe

[Verse 2: DeJ Loaf]
I hate to do it, but
I don't, I don't know why
I put you in this situation knowin' you will
Fall in love with me, but I won't be there to catch you
If it ain't about the sex then I'd prolly neglect you
Don't take it personal, I'm just tryna protect you
I don't checked out, baby come meet me at the register
I know what you want, you wanna be on a pedestal
You wanna be mine, but I can't be more than friends with you

[Chorus: Keke Palmer + DeJ Loaf]
I don't belong to you
Keep it on the down low
Keep it on the down low
Keep it on the down low
I will keep it on the down low
I don't belong to you
Keep it on the down low
Keep it on the down low
Keep it on the down low
I'ma keep it on the down low
Keep it on the down low
Won't you keep it on the down low?
I don't belong to you
I don't belong to you

[Post-Chorus: Keke Palmer]
Ain't no white house, ain't no picket fence
Baby you know we don't want the same things
While you're caught up in your feelings
I feel the same as I did yesterday
Baby we've been through this and I feel the same way
I know you don't wanna hear this, and I hate to say it, babe
I don't belong to you

[Outro: DeJ Loaf]
You called me last night and I ain't pick up
Why you wanna move fast? I like the small footsteps
Blowin' up my phone, I got the hookup
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
My love got you shook up
I don't belong to you, I don't belong to you
I said I don't belong to you, I don't belong to you
I don't belong to you, I don't belong to you, yeah

Music VideoEdit

The music video was released on October 26, 2015. The clip for the sultry R&B jam finds Palmer in various states of undress as she sings of keeping a relationship “on the down-low.” In the opening scene, she’s arguing with an apparent male lover in bed, then heads home to shower (in nothing but a gold body chain), before, in the end scene, showing up on a woman’s doorstep in lingerie and a fur coat.
